│ Purpose/History: │
└──────────────────┘
HDN was established in May, 1992 to foster the exchange of
amateur radio related software through a world wide, file
distribution network.
HDN coordinator, 1:124/7009, is also the official HDN library.
Files released through HDN are always available for file
request from 1:124/7009 (14.4 / 16.8K DS/HST) or 1:124/7023 for
1200 and 2400 baude transfers. Downloads are available from the
HDN BBS at (214) 226-1181 (16.8K DS/HST) or (214) 226-1182 (2400).
When calling the BBS to download, please follow these steps:
At the 'FULL NAME' login prompt, type: Guest;guest
HDN has only been around a short time, but has grown rapidly
and is now available in Australia, Canada, Europe, Asia and files
are accessible through InterNet. HDN is also distributed via
SKYLINK satellite to the United States and Canada.
The primary objective of HDN is to provide free access to amateur
radio, shortwave, scanner and electronic software to users
scattered around the world.
Newly released files are announced through Fidonet HAM_REQ echo.
HDN is a member of the International File Distribution Cooperative
(IFDC).
┌───────────────────────┐
│ HDN SOFTWARE POLICIES │
└───────────────────────┘
Software distributed via HDN must be public domain or
shareware. No "pirated" commercial software is accepted.
Crippled releases containing counters or expiration dates are
NOT to be sent through the HDN system. Programs which offer
additional features to registered users, but otherwise contain
no other restrictions, are acceptable.
Demo programs may be sent through the HDN system provided it is
clearly marked as a demo and distributed in the demo file area.
┌─────────────────────┐
│ HDN SYSTEM POLICIES │
└─────────────────────┘
HDN files must be accessible to users at no cost and HDN
systems must support file requests.
Participating BBS's must run Fidonet compatible mailers in
order to be able to manage the automatic distribution of the
programs.
BBS Users may be required to answer a questionaire before being
allowing access to an HDN BBS.
An HDN system must call their host at least once a week.
Participation may necessitate long distance calls to obtain
the software. These calls are the responsibility of the HDN
hubs and nodes. HDN participates should use MCI's Friend and
Family and restrict calling to late evenings and nights when
long distance rates are lowest. HDN membership should not add
significantly to long distance bills.
HDN feed assignments may be made direct to any HDN regional hub
or alternate domain hub, as well as the HDN Coordinator.
Any node going "down", shall notify the hub system as to
duration of the "down" period.
Any node which does not pick up HDN traffic for a period
exceeding 10 days shall be considered "down". The feed hub
shall attempt to determine the nodes' status via netmail. If
contact cannot be made, the hub shall terminate the link and
notify the HDN Coordinator of the change.
HDN hubs, alternate domain hubs, and local net distribution
hubs should use either RAID or equivalent program with can
automatically generate a link report to the HDN Coordinator
once a month.
Raid will create a link report by using the following
command line:
RAID NETAREAREPORT 1:124/7009 HAM*
Filemgr will create a link report by using the schedule menu
and creating a *EC report
┌────────────────────┐
│ HOW TO GET STARTED │
└────────────────────┘
Obtain one of the following programs that allow automated
distribution of the files and their descriptions.
TICK, FILEMGR, ALLFIX
File distribution aids are always available from the HDN
coordinator at 1:124/7009. Magic names are:
TICK
FILEMGR
ALLFIX
Fill out the HDN application and netmail it to the HDN
hub of your choice and the HDN Coordinator. That's it.

│ HDN PROGRAM DISTRIBUTION │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Through HDN distribution, programs are posted at hundreds
of BBS sites across North America, Europe, Australia and Asia.
In addition to using the technology and resources of
Fidonet, HDN also has distribution access to the anonymous
file distribution facilities of Internet.
HDN reaches not only the BBS hobbyist user, but also the
academic and commercial users who are linked internationally
through Internet.
HDN is also distributed via other FidoNet compatible networks
such as CrossNet, PhnxNet and IcNet. HDN is now available and
being distributed by SKYLINK satellite to the United States
and Canada.
HDN member systems are announced in a listing every
month in the Fidonet HAM_REQ message echo. Users can
find the closest HDN system to their calling area
from this listing. In addition, all files which are
distributed through HDN are announced in other domain
echo as well as several other Fidonet message echos
related to software distribution.
Distribution requires many long distance phone calls to
link HDN nodes. HDN's participating sysops pay the
costs for these links out of a dedication to the hobby
spirit and for the benefit of all radio hobbyist.
HDN policy is a service provided at no charge. There
is no fee, charge or commission for HDN distribution
services. HDN is a hobbyist, non-commercial and
not-for-profit project.
┌───────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ BENEFIT TO AUTHORS │
└───────────────────────────────────────────┘
Fidonet is a vast world of 21,000 plus bulletin boards
and the thousands and thousands of users connected through
them. Internet is vastly larger with an even larger audience.
HDN has been overwhelmed with growth and simply can not keep
track. As HDN sites have multiplied, so has the potential
for new user registrations.
Wide distribution should do its part to increase your regis-
tration rate. It's simple. Increase the number of people who
can download and try your program and registrations should
increase in proportion. Increase the odds that your programs
get to users in complete and uncorrupted form, and re-
gistration should increase also. Downloading users need not be
frustrated by old versions or user corrupted files. No one
can guarantee registrations, but HDN can help you reach your
audience.
┌───────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ PROGRAM SUMISSIONS │
└───────────────────────────────────────────┘
The best way to get a program into HDN distribution is
to mail your program disk. Submissions should not be
crippled. Demo programs must be clearly marked as demo.
HDN recommends following the guidelines of the Association
of Shareware Professionals.
HDN will not accept software licenses that have
restrictions on limiting distribution to types of
media (BBS versus CDROM) or to only certain countries.
All programs are scanned for any viruses and all files are
compressed into one downloadable archive.
You may upload your program at high speeds directly to
the Ham Distribution BBS. By following these steps:
Call the bbs node best suited for your modem speed
HDN BBS Node-1 (214) 226-1181 (16.8K, DS/HST)
HDN BBS Node-2 (214) 226-1182 (2400baud)
At the 'FULL NAME' login prompt type: HDN;guest
Programs may be file attached and forwarded via FidoNet
compatible mailer to the HDN Coordinator, 1:124/7009 for
14.4K and 16.8K transfers or 1:124/7023 for 2400 baud.
Submissions via mail can be made to the following
